Summer home or all year: winter in Antalya

· Author: Grand Emlak

A summer home or a year-round home in Antalya? Instead of opinion, we describe winter with MGM, AFAD and municipal data.

The winter months in figures (MGM, 1930–2025)

The table below takes November to March from MGM's provincial statistics for Antalya; rainy days are rounded to one decimal, and the sea-water column is MGM's 1970–2024 monthly mean for the whole Mediterranean coast. The table values come from MGM's provincial statistics page and its Mediterranean sea-water report; January is the coldest month, and even its mean minimum is 6.1 °C. Source: Turkish State Meteorological Service (MGM), Turkish State Meteorological Service (MGM), accessed 08.10.2026

Sunshine: five hours a day even in winter

According to MGM, mean daily sunshine is 4.8 hours in December, 4.9 in January, 5.7 in February and 6.7 in March; less than half of July's 11.7 hours, but the winter months are not sunless. On the other hand, December averages 11.9 and January 12.4 rainy days, so roughly one day in three is wet in winter. Source: Turkish State Meteorological Service (MGM), accessed 08.10.2026

Rain and flood awareness

Most of the year's rain is concentrated in winter: according to the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Plan of AFAD Antalya, the province's mean annual rainfall is 1,085 mm and about 80% falls from November to February; the districts with the highest flood risk are the city centre, Kumluca, Finike, Kemer, Manavgat, Demre and Alanya. MGM's highest recorded daily rainfall is 331.5 mm on 17.01.1969, and the metropolitan climate action plan classes flood hazard as high in the city centre and on the coastal plains. Snow and cold: coast and mountains are different worlds

In MGM's 1930–2025 records the lowest temperature is −4.6 °C in February and the deepest snow cover 5 cm (07.01.1993). According to the metropolitan action plan, cold-wave hazard is low or very low from the city centre to the low shores of the Teke Peninsula, but very high in Akseki, İbradı, the uplands of Alanya and Korkuteli. On the coast the January mean is 9.7–12.5 °C, whereas Elmalı and Korkuteli average 2.4–2.6 °C, and in mountain districts such as Akseki and Gündoğmuş winter precipitation falls as snow. How warm is the sea in winter?

By MGM's 1970–2024 Mediterranean means the sea is 18.5 °C in December, 16.7 in January, 16.0 in February and 16.6 in March, against an August mean of 28.1 °C. Live readings are published on e-Devlet: on the morning of 08.10.2026 Konyaaltı measured 26.8 °C. Heating, transport and infrastructure

According to the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Plan, Antalya's natural gas distribution licence was granted in 2006; at the end of 2020 there were 149,134 subscribers and 2,006 km of network, with distribution in Kepez, Muratpaşa, Döşemealtı, Konyaaltı, Aksu and Serik. Antalya Ulaşım A.Ş. runs the tram lines on seasonal timetables; the T3 Varsak–Museum line switched to its winter timetable on 14 September 2026. Antalya Airport, operated by DHMİ, is open all year with domestic and international terminals. Source: AFAD Antalya Provincial Directorate, Antalya Ulaşım A.Ş., DHMİ, accessed 08.10.2026

Summer or all year: what the data say

The Antalya Provincial Directorate of Culture and Tourism describes the province as a Mediterranean-climate region with mild, rainy winters and hot, dry summers, and notes that traditional Antalya houses were designed to block the sun and stay cool rather than to retain heat. By MGM means the gap between January (10.1 °C) and July (28.6 °C) is about 18.5 degrees; heating in winter and cooling in summer are shaped within that range.
